We are looking for artists, engineers, creators, designers, and anyone looking to try something new!
The contest is to showcase art designed entirely from reclaimed materials. We offer all materials for free as well as tools for creating the art. The reclaimed materials all originate from electronics that were originally intended for landfills or recycling centers.
There will be a first and second place winner with 5 judge awards. Awards will be donations to a local charity of the winner's choice from a pre-determined list. First is $150, Second is $100, and judge awards are $50.
The Junk Lab is disassembling discarded E-waste to create Stem kits for local schools. During this process we gather a lot of parts that are perfect for art pieces! We wanted to host a contest to allow students to utilize these parts and the tools we have avaliable.
There are 3 avenues for this art contest:
1) You can work on your own and submit before 4/10/2023
2) You can come gather materials from the Junk Lab as pieces for your art
3) You can work on your piece in the Junk Lab during our weekly lab hours (Wed/Thurs 5-7pm, Sat/Sun 12-2pm)
You are welcome to choose a path to begin then change your mind whenever. If you are interested please complete the google form below and we will reach out shortly after to check-in, set up a time for you to pick-up materials or schedule a lab-time to work if you selected that avenue.
Art is due by 4/1/2023 at 11:59pm
Please email ztl4bm@virginia.edu to set up a drop off time. Please provide a picture of your art so we come brainstorm a display for your piece.
