1. COLLECTION
We currently recycle #5 plastic, focusing on pipette tip boxes from research labs! Keeping it local, we collect from 30+ labs in Charlottesville, VA including labs located in Pinn Hall, West Complex, MR4, MR5, MR6, Fontaine Research Park, Gilmer Hall, and more!

The labs reach out to us, complete onboarding and once this simple process is done, they recycle with us! Once they collect/save up enough plastic they reach out to JunkLabz staff and we send someone to do a collection! We try to coordinate with labs in the same area/building and do multi-lab pick ups at once!
Side note:
Do you work in a lab in Charlottesville or know of someoene that does? Would this lab be interested in decreasing their environmental impact and reducing waste by recycling with us? Follow the buttoon below to learn more about how we work with labs and how to reach out!
At JunkLabz, we currently focus on collecting #5 plastic pipette tip boxes for recycling. It’s important to check that each component of the box has a recycling triangle with the number 5 in or beside it. This helps us ensure that the materials we receive can be processed efficiently. (Check out some examples on the right!) Annnnd for what to avoid.. unfortunately, #7 plastic pipette tip boxes, like the one to right, occasionally end up in our collection bins, but we can’t process these (at least not yet!).
When a lab begins recycling with JunkLabz, they’ll receive one of our handmade collection bags. These bags are sewn from thrifted materials and designed to easily store and transport the high volumes of pipette tip boxes we collect! They make collection super easy. We simply take the boxes away in the full bag and leave the lab with a new empty bag to fill!
